This paper aims at discussing the usage by Davidson as to events of Quine's criterion of ontological commitment. According to Davidson, we are ontologically committed to the existence of events as individuals as we employ literally terms such as ‘Caesar’s death’, for instance. Davidson extends this analysis to actions as well, since actions are human events. One of the consequences of this view is that psychology deals with individual events in a non-lawful way. An alternative view is here proposed, based (...) on a complementary criterion, namely ontological density, according to which from the point of view of a given theory, we can always distinguish between events (or phenomena) and individuals (entities) among the overall occurrences described by the theory. Some consequences of this alternative view of psychology as a science dealing lawfully with general human events are also explored here. (shrink)

Este artigo investiga a concepção de Thomas Kuhn acerca do desenvolvimento científico como base para uma teoria social da investigação. Nesse sentido, o autor procura explicar o papel desempenhado pelas comunidades científicas na constituição da prática científica. Esta consiste na investigação dirigida por padrões compartilhados, tais como valores e modelos, que também dirigem e dão forma ao comportamento individual dos cientistas. Desse ponto de vista, o comportamento na investigação das comunidades científicas precede e é mais fundamental do que o dos (...) indivíduos. Na verdade, a investigação de um cientista em particular dá-se sempre, e apenas, dentro do quadro intelectual fornecido pela comunidade científica. /// This paper aims to depict Thomas Kuhn's view of scientific development as the basis for a social theory of scientific investigation. The role played by scientific communities in the constitution of scientific practice is accounted for. Scientific practice consists in inquiry governed by shared standards such as values and models, which also govern and shape the behavior of individual scientists. From this point of view the investigative behavior of scientific communities is prior to and more fundamental than individual scientific behavior. This paper proposes an alternative view of the connection between knowledge and truth. Truth is traditionally seen as a semantic notion, i.e. a relation between what we say about the world and the world itself. Epistemologists and philosophers of science are therefore apt to resort to correspondence theories of truth in order to deal with the question whether our theories and beliefs are true. Correspondence theories try to define truth, but, in order to do so, they must choose a truth (...) bearer, i.e. something capable of being true, for instance, propositions, sentences or statements. According to the analysis here proposed, none of these truth bearers can be defined without reference to the others. The pragmatic, alternative view here presented, in its turn, is unaffected by this kind of conceptual difficulty. According to this view, one must focus on the use of truth terms – such as ‘true’, ‘false’, ‘correct’, ‘appropriate’, etc. – and the methodological role such terms play in the investigative practices and research programs to be found both in the sciences and in other, everyday investigative activities, such as forensic and journalistic investigations. Since Hume, the problem of induction is viewed as the problem of skeptical doubts concerning our empirical generalizations. In this paper, I argue that this problem is neither a question for epistemology nor a consequence of a skeptical (pyhrronian) view on the matter. Rather I argue that from the point of view of alethic skepticism, Hume´s problem appears to be an issue concerning the pragmatics of investigation, and I try to report some of its most basic aspects. The result is (...) a new image of induction that resembles with Nelson Goodman´s solution, but I avoid any dogmatic commitment to his ideas. (shrink)

This paper aims at dealing with the problem of normativity as regards naturalized epistemologies. According to Quine's view in "Epistemology Naturalized" normativity is to be ruled out from epistemology altogether. However, some other naturalists and Quine himself in later works revise that doctrine. Particularly, Richard Boyd and Alvin Goldman's stances are reviewed here, in addition to Quine's later view according to which normativity concerns "applied" epistemology. Finally, a further solution is proposed, which stems from an analysis of the pragmatics of (...) investigation. According to this view normativity is a feature of our investigations; it is not related to epistemology as a discipline. (shrink)

This paper aims to discuss Quine’s last analysis of propositional attitudes as involving intentionality and as regards human action and the very subject matter of social sciences. As to this problem, Quine acquiesces in both Davidson’s anomalous monism and Dennett’s intentional stance. An alternative analysis is here presented, which is based on Howard Rachlin’s teleological behaviorism. Some problems regarding this approach are also considered. Intentionality and rationality are still to be saved, but they are construed according to a lawful perspective (...) to human behavior and social contexts of action. (shrink)

ABSTRACTIan Hacking puts forward a distinction between two kinds of scientific realism. According to scientific realism about theories, scientific theories are accepted as approximately true; according to scientific realism about unobservable entities, the theoretical terms occurring in scientific theories refer to existing, real entities. This article seeks to show that Claude Bernard's philosophy of science is a realist one about scientific theories, but anti-realist about unobservable entities. The term “fictionalism” is used here to stand for this sort of anti-realism about (...) unobservable entities. (shrink)

Nesse artigo, procuramos mostrar que duas alternativas célebres aos fundacionalismos tradicionais - o falibilismo de Popper e o naturalismo de Quine - apresentam consequências indesejáveis a respeito do problema da base empírica. Propomos uma terceira alternativa - o ceticismo alético -, que pode lidar adequadamente com esse problema. Além disso, compreendemos o ceticismo alético como uma doutrina diferente do ceticismo pirrônico tradicional (e outras versões antigas e modernas de ceticismo), no que diz respeito ao objetivo da investigação, embora ele coincida (...) com o pirronismo em seu método. ResumoAinda que Schopenhauer não seja nominalmente referido no Tractatus, não há dúvida razoável de que ele esteja ali presente, particularmente nos aforismos sobre o solipsismo e a ética. Nesses aforismos, Wittgenstein apropria-se de várias teses e movimentos argumentativos que encontra em O Mundo como Vontade e Representação, mas faz uso deles para seus próprios fins filosóficos. Ao serem deslocados de seucontexto original ao contexto do Tractatus, eles mudam radicalmente de sentido e são incorporados a um percurso crítico lógico que resulta (...) em uma visão dos temas tradicionais da metafísica e da ética muito diferente daquela que resulta do percurso epistemológico de Schopenhauer em O Mundo como Vontade e Representação. A análise minuciosa desse deslocamento distorcivo pode, por contraste, ensinar algo importante a respeito da singularidade de cada um desses percursos críticos.AbstractAlthough Schopenhauer is not mentioned by name in Wittgenstein’s Tractatus, there is no reasonable doubt that he is there, particularly in the aphorisms about solipsism and ethics. In these aphorisms, Wittgenstein appropriates several theses and argumentative movements that he finds in The World as Will and Representation, but uses them for his own philosophical purposes. When displaced from their original context to the context of the Tractatus, their meaning changes radically and they are incorporated into a logical critical path that results in a vision of the traditional themes of metaphysics and ethics very different from the one that results from Schopenhauer’s epistemological path in The World as Will and Representation. The detailed analysis of this kind of distorting displacement can, by means of contrast, teach us something important about the uniqueness of each of these critical paths. (shrink)

This paper argues for a version of perspectival realism as to abstract objects. Differently from bodies and mental states, abstract realities are supposed to be always unobservable objects, things never given in perception. Contrary to this received view, this paper tries to show that abstract objects can be perceived, even though people aren’t currently aware of perceiving them. Moreover, in order to perceive abstract objects we must be accordingly equipped. Our equipment to perceive abstract objects involves not only retino-cortical elements, (...) but mental and cultural conditions as well. (shrink)

In this paper, I try to argue that both science, as a specific kind of knowledge, and human knowledge in general are activities of constructing models. In the first part, I present my conception according to which scientific models are abstract entities, and that scientific theories may be interpreted as classes of models as abstract replicas of real settings, in which certain laws apply. In the second part, I try to extend that same conception to ordinary human knowledge, particularly to (...) the case of the cognitive activity of classifying objects of experience. (shrink)

Este artigo procura discutir a concepção behaviorista radical de Skinner sobre as regras metodológicas e as leis científicas. Skinner é basicamente simpático ao operacionismo porque, de acordo com essa concepção, as possíveis leis psicológicas não são interpretadas de forma realista (e mentalista), mas como uma forma de controlar e modelar o comportamento. Como a análise do comportamento é aplicada à própria ciência, é natural esperar que os behavioristas defendam uma filosofia operacionista da ciência. Mas Skinner também é um crítico do (...) operacionismo por causa das conexões dessa doutrina com o positivismo. Ora, desse ponto de vista, o problema é como interpretar a ciência como um empreendimento “operacionista,” embora o comportamento dos cientistas não deva ser reduzido a um comportamento dirigido por regras, nem os enunciados científicos a regras metodológicas. Compreendida assim, a filosofia da ciência de Skinner é muito parecida com a de Kuhn, o que vai ser discutido aqui também. O objetivo deste artigo é elucidar a ideia tractariana de forma lógica. Partimos da identificação de diferenças conceituais significativas entre ocorrências do termo “forma” no texto do Tractatus. Estas diferenças permitem a obtenção de dois conceitos distintos. O primeiro deles é a forma dos objetos; o segundo, a forma de afiguração. No interior desta última noção, é possível ainda identificar a ideia de uma forma lógica de afiguração, a qual é distinta da forma de afiguração devido à sua generalidade. Argumentamos (...) que tanto a noção de forma dos objetos quanto a de forma lógica de afiguração podem ser entendidas sob a luz de uma reflexão sobre a apropriação wittgensteiniana do Princípio do Contexto de Frege. O uso relevante deste Princípio para a noção de forma lógica, o qual configura um expediente também utilizado por Frege numa explicação sobre a função de letras variáveis em matemática, envolve a noção tractariana de expressão [Aüsdruck]. Por seu turno, a forma dos objetos é um conceito que surge de uma espécie de intromissão ontológica do princípio na ontologia tractariana. Este movimento contraria um pressuposto de Frege quanto ao alcance do princípio, cuja aplicação está restrita à linguagem e não se estende à referência ou significado [Bedeutung] dos sinais linguísticos. Regarding the famous Sea Battle Argument, which Aristotle presents in De Interpretatione 9, there has never been a general agreement not only about its correctness but also, and mainly, about what the argument really is. According to the most natural reading of the chapter, the argument appeals to a temporal concept of truth and concludes that not every statement is always either true or false. However, many of Aristotle’s followers and commentators have not adopted this reading. I believe that it (...) has faced so much resistance for reasons of hermeneutic charity: denying the law of universal bivalence seems to be overly disruptive to logical orthodoxy – the kind of logical orthodoxy represented by what we now call classical propositional logic, much of which Aristotle clearly supports in many texts. I intend to show that the logical-semantic theses that the traditional reading finds in De Interpretatione 9 are much more conservative than they may seem to be at first glance. First, I will show that they complement, and do not contradict in any way, the orthodox definitions of the concepts of truth and statement that Aristotle advances in other texts. Second, by resorting in an anachronistic vein to concepts and methods peculiar to contemporary logic, I will show that a trivalent modal semantics conforming to those theses can be built for a standard formal language of the classical propositional calculus. It is remarkable that reasonable concepts of logical truth and logical consequence that may be defined on the basis of this trivalent modal semantics are coextensive with their orthodox counterparts, the concepts of tautology and tautological consequence of classical bivalent and extensional semantics. Sua doutrina de que a psicologia deriva diretamente da fisiologia das funções do cérebro se destina a promover um tipo de psicologia experimental compatível com a idéia de que os fenômenos vitais devem ser explicados como fenômenos físicos e químicos que ocorrem dentro do organismo, mas regidos por leis biológicas.This paper seeks to discuss (...) Claude Bernard's monism in the philosophy of mind and psychology. Bernard refuses to join both the materialist and the spiritualist camps. His doctrine that psychology stems directly from the physiology of brain functions is intended to promote a type of experimental psychology compatible with his idea that vital phenomena are to be explained as physical and chemical phenomena occurring in the organism, and governed by biological laws. A partir das considerações de Emmeche, Køppe e Stjernfelt, que são aqui criticadas, e em parte com base naquelas de Pattee, o artigo apresenta uma interpretação do tipo de relação que existe entre as condições de base de um evento e este último, e as relações entre a totalidade de um sistema e suas partes, empregando as noções de comunidade e de finalidade interna, noções essas devidas (...) a Kant. ABSTRACT This paper deals with the question of downward causation in connection with emergent systems. Beginning with the comments offered by Emmeche, Køppe, and Stjernfelt, which are criticized here, and partially based on those of Pattee, the paper puts forward an interpretation of the kind of relation that exists between the basal conditions for a given event and the event itself, and the relations between a given system as a whole and its parts making use of the concepts of community and internal purposiveness, concepts due to Kant. Este artigo apresenta um modelo do agente livre compatível com as teorias evolutivas e neurofisiológicas da mente e com base especificamente nas noções de liberdade em situação, de Sartre, e de racionalidade limitada, de Simon. Além disso, a noção de agência de controle de Skinner é generalizada, sendo aplicada também ao caso de estruturas cerebrais. O agente livre é descrito como o indivíduo humano cujo eu consciente escolhe e decide no contexto de múltiplas determinações tanto ambientais quanto neurofisiológicas. A autonomia (...) do agente humano é resultado dos processos que levam à aquisição das modalidades da consciência existencial, inclusive a consciência moral. This paper deals with the questions of emergence and complex (mental and social) systems and with downward determination from the viewpoint of perspectival realism. These are issues concerning the foundations of the human sciences, generally speaking, and particularly psychology and sociology. A criterion is put forward, which distinguish metaphysicalfrom ontological (conceptual) problems, and the notions of complex, hierarchic system and causation that would be suitable for those that defend emergence and perspectivist foundations of the human sciences are discussed. Essas são questões sobre os fundamentos das ciências humanas em geral e, em particular, da psicologia e da sociologia. É proposto um critério para distinguir problemas metafísicos de problemas ontológicos (ou conceituais), e são discutidas as noções de sistema complexo hierárquico e de causação que seriam adequadas para uma fundamentação emergentista e perspectivista das ciências humanas. As “Shut up and Dance” begins, we sympathize with Kenny as he is blackmailed by computer hackers who threaten to release a video of him masturbating to pornography. But as the episode closes, our attitude flips. He wasn't just looking at pornography, but child pornography! Kenny's not a victim, he's a villain, and the hackers are vigilantes. But should we be celebrating? What Kenny did was deplorable of course, but should we wish for such things to happen to deplorable people? (...) Should the hackers have just notified the police? Or must we apply this kind of punishment to truly attain justice? If so, what does it tell us about our notion of justice? Would we want to live in a society that encourages vigilantes? This paper aims to argue for a lawful, intentional approach to human behavior. Donald Davidson’s idea that an event is mental according to the way it is described is here accepted. However, his nonlawful conception of psychology, in its turn, is rejected. Rather, based on Howard Rachlin’s teleological behaviorism, a lawful, externalist approach to explaining human behavior is adopted, according to which a bit of behavior is to be interpreted in connection with other ones, within a certain social context. Physiological responses in futsal have not been studied together with temporal information about the players’ stay on the court. The aim of this study was to compare heart rate and blood lactate concentration responses between 1-H and 2-H considering the time of permanency of the players on the court at each substitution in a futsal match. HR was recorded during entire match and [La−] was analyzed after each substitution of seven players. %HRmean and [La−] mean did not differ between 1-H (...) and 2-H. Time in intensity zones of 50–100 %HRmax differed only in 60–70 %HRmax. HR coefficient of variation throughout the match was low and among the four outfield players on the court. Substitutions, time of permanence on the court, ratio between time in- and out-ratio on the court also were similar between 1-H and 2-H. Balancing the number of substitutions, and the In:Outcourt ratio of players in both halves of the match, playing lower time at 1-H, ~8 min for each participation in the match, made it possible to maintain intensity of the match in 2-H similar to the 1H. These results are a good guidance to coaches and for application in future studies. (shrink)

A lógica I1, um sistema trivalorado de caráter fracamente intuicionista, foi introduzida, via sistema axiomático (Hilbertiano) em 1995 por Sette e Carnielli. O presente artigo tem por objetivo apresentar esse sistema em um formalismo lógico em Cálculo de Sequentes, denominado de GI1, o qual se apresenta como um sistema de prova de teoremas, caracterizado como um algoritmo, sendo mais aplicável do ponto de vista computacional, por meio da dualização do sistema de tableaux analíticos TI1. Ademais, é apresentado a equivalência dedutiva (...) entre o sistema de sequentes GI1 com o sistema Hilbertiano I1. (shrink)

Investigamos, neste texto, as concepções de informação propostas por Peirce (1839-1914) e Bateson (1904-1980) e suas implicações no processo sistêmico e evolucionário da mente, contextualizando-as no antropoceno. Destacamos as semelhanças entre as abordagens dos dois autores a partir do papel exercido pela informação na dinâmica constitutiva dos processos mentais, bem como tais abordagens podem servir como uma bússola para redirecionarmos nossa visão fragmentada de mundo e minimizarmos os impactos da ação humana na natureza, amenizando as dificuldades da era do antropoceno. Diferentemente da abordagem determinista, mecanicista e reducionista nos estudos da causalidade que rege as relações, mostramos que Peirce e Bateson inserem a informação como elemento principal que propicia a emergência da comunicação, do acaso, da organização e da continuidade dos sistemas vivos. Nossa hipótese é a de que para ambos os autores, a mente é imanente e coextensiva à natureza, cuja complexidade extrapola os limites investigativos da ciência tradicional, lançando luz aos debates sobre o antropoceno, os quais visam investigar, compreender e propor ações para amenizar os impactos da conduta humana na natureza. ABSTRACT The presence of truth and honesty is a permanent demand, and becomes vital the more committed and intimate a relationship is. Medical practice is relevant to this discussion when one questions whether or not a physician should always tell their patient the truth in the face of a progressive or potentially fatal disease, regarding the diagnosis, outcome, therapy and evolution of the specific disease. From this discussion we aim, with the present report, to look at the truth applicable to (...) the patient‐physician relationship, and its ethical and moral implications; and also to look at where the Brazilian Code of Medical Ethics (BCME) and the medical literature stand regarding this issue. One concludes that there are only two moments not to tell a patient the truth: when the patient does not want to be informed, and when the truth could be iatrogenic. The question now is, when would the truth be iatrogenic? Physicians, in our opinion, would not be able to judge solitarily when the truth might be deleterious to their patient. Alternatively, we propose the appointment of a multidisciplinary commission to help the doctor with such a decision. (shrink)

A guerra civil iniciada no final de 2013 no Sudão do Sul causou, pela primeira vez na história das Nações Unidas, um afluxo gigantesco de deslocados internos para o interior de bases da Missão das Nações Unidas no Sudão do Sul, em busca de proteção. Assim, foram criados os Protection of Civilian Sites. Com a chegada de dezenas de milhares de pessoas em poucas semanas, houve um enorme crescimento nas demandas humanitárias e de segurança. Para prover a necessária proteção, foi (...) necessário o trabalho conjunto de militares, policiais e civis da UNMISS, que será apresentado nesse trabalho. (shrink)

In Brazil, the CNPq provides grants, funds and fellowships to productive scientists to support their investigations. They are ranked and categorized into four hierarchical levels ranging from PQ 1A to PQ 1D. Few studies, however, report and analyse scientific productivity in different sub-fields of Biomedical Sciences, e.g., Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Biophysics and Physiology. In fact, systematic comparisons of productivity among the PQ 1 categories within the above sub-fields are lacking in the literature. Here, the scientific productivity of 323 investigators receiving PQ (...) 1 fellowships in these sub-fields of BS was investigated. The Scopus database was used to compile the total number of articles, citations, h-index values and authorship positions in the most cited papers by researchers granted CNPq fellowships. We found that researchers from Pharmacology had the best performance for all of the parameters analysed, followed by those in Biochemistry. There was great variability in scientific productivity within the PQ 1A level in all of the sub-fields of BS, but not within the other levels. Analysis of the most cited papers of PQ 1 researchers in Pharmacology revealed that the citations of researchers in the 1C and 1D levels were associated with publications with their senior supervisors, whereas those in the 1B level were less connected with their supervisors in comparison to those in 1A. Taken together, these findings suggest that the scientific performance of PQ 1A researchers in BS is not homogenous. In our opinion, parameters such as the most cited papers without the involvement of Ph.D. and/or post-doctoral supervisors should be used to make decisions regarding any given researcher’s fellowship award level. Livro em homenagem ao filósofo brasileiro Luiz Henrique Lopes, um dos maiores expoentes da filosofia analítica. Neste livro grandes nomes da filosofia brasileira discorrem sobre a filosofia analítica e vários assuntos da filosofia contemporânea.

Como valor fundamental da atividade, a objetividade jornalística já foi investigada conceitualmente por diversos estudos acadêmicos cujos resultados, apesar de publicados em livros e revistas da área, não alteraram a maneira como consumidores de informação, jornalistas e até mesmo professores de jornalismo entendem filosoficamente a objetividade e, consequentemente, a sua aplicação nas rotinas e procedimentos da prática jornalística. Este artigo tem o objetivo de realizar a revisão bibliográfica de dois importantes trabalhos de autores brasileiros que investigaram a noção de objetividade. (...) Os governos de Fernando Henrique Cardoso são considerados responsáveis por uma forte redução do Estado através de políticas de contenção dos gastos públicos, as quais atingiram também as Forças Armadas. Inversamente, os governos de Lula da Silva apresentaram um discurso desenvolvimentista, que, supostamente, favoreceu o investimento nas Forças Armadas, invertendo as tendências das gestões anteriores. O artigo faz, a partir da leitura de dois textos do cientista político João Roberto Martins Filho e de dados estatísticos da SEORI, a análise (...) crítica e comparativa entre os governos citados em relação aos investimentos – e somente em relação aos investimentos – em Defesa Nacional, na manutenção e modernização das Forças Armadas.
